The final remix to be taken from Marie Davidson & L'Œil Nu’s ‘Renegade Breakdown’ project comes from fellow Canadian and renowned experimental composer Tim Hecker, who takes on ‘Lead Sister’, a track which revolves around the sombre subject matter of Karen Carpenter, of The Carpenters, who died of complications from anorexia, and who was subject to intense psychological abuse behind the duo’s smiling all-American facade.
“I called this mix 'barely alive' as it was written during the depths of a Montreal winter during a 6 month curfew..... Marie's beautiful vocal line was rendered into a melodic quantized flatline that reflected more on that wretched winter and my own cryolocked mindspace than anything else.... Cheers!🍺” - Tim Hecker
“We’re honoured to share with you Tim’s remix of ‘Lead Sister’. Constructed around Marie’s vocal stem, Tim brilliantly breaks the original adagio melody line into some angular plasticity, and lets it drift, free from tone or cadence, forever in limbo. ‘Lead Sister’ is a song composed in memory of Karen Carpenter.” - Marie Davidson & L'Œil Nu
It follows recent remixes from Young Marco, Jessy Lanza, Jlin and Morgan Geist—which saw widespread support from the likes of Pitchfork, DJ Mag, Jezebel, PopMatters, The Quietus, FADER, Resident Advisor, Magnetic Mag and many more.
The band also recently performed their debut livestream 'Renegade Breakdown Live'—shot and directed by experimental Quebecois filmmaker Denis Côté, and described by NME as “less a livestream gig, more a musical rebirth” in their 4/5 review. The group will be heading out on tour later this year including summer shows at All Points East and Dreamland, plus a headline show at London’s Village Underground later in the year.
‘Renegade Breakdown’—released in September 2020 on Ninja Tune—is a bold reimagining of Marie Davidson’s sound, and was praised widely by the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork and The New Yorker, with Bandcamp listing it as one of their “Best Albums of Summer” and additional support from FADER, Billboard, DAZED, Vulture, NME and many more. This followed Marie’s previous solo album, 2018’s acclaimed ‘Working Class Woman’—which was also accompanied by a series of curated remixes from Nina Kraviz, John Talabot, Afrodeutsche, Silent Servant and including a notable, Grammy-nominated Soulwax remix of ‘Work It’, which would go on to become a bonafide dance anthem that still receives heavy rotation both on and off the turntables to this day.
Marie Davidson & L'Œil Nu’s ‘Lead Sister (Tim Hecker Remix)’ is out now on Ninja Tune.
